Kikuchi na\u00EEt \u00E0 Hanamaki dans la pr\u00E9fecture d'Iwate le 1er mai 1916. Une fois dipl\u00F4m\u00E9 de l'\u00E9cole orientale de photographie, Kikuchi travaille dans la division photographique de Tokyo K\u014Dgeisha et commence sa carri\u00E8re en tant que photographe d'informations. En 1941, il travaille dans le d\u00E9partement photographique de T\u014Dh\u014Dsha, soci\u00E9t\u00E9 cr\u00E9\u00E9e par S\u014Dz\u014D Okada et en 1942 est membre de l'\u00E9quipe de photographes du magazine Front. Son travail l'emm\u00E8ne en Chine, dans le Manchukuo et aux Philippines. En 1945, le minist\u00E8re de l'\u00E9ducation organise le \u00AB groupe d'information du conseil des sciences du comit\u00E9 sp\u00E9cial du Japon sur les dommages caus\u00E9s par la bombe atomique, Hiroshima / Nagasaki \u00BB et commande le Nippon Eiga-sha comme sa division de documentaires film\u00E9s[pas clair]. Kikuchi travaille comme photographe attach\u00E9 \u00E0 la division o\u00F9 il est responsable de clich\u00E9s \u00E0 des fins m\u00E9dicales. Il enregistre les effets de la bombe atomique d'Hiroshima du 30 septembre au 22 octobre 1945.
