He has previously worked as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the head coach of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL team), the Kitchener Rangers. Spott became a junior hockey coach in 1994, eventually moving to the OHL in 1997. He became a head coach in the OHL with the Kitchener Rangers when Peter DeBoer left the Rangers for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League in 2008. On July 3, 2013, he was announced as the head coach of the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League after the departure of former head coach Dallas Eakins.
