The 186-square-kilometre (72 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located along the western shore of the V\u00E5gsfjorden in what is now Harstad Municipality. Trondenes included the majority of the island of Gryt\u00F8ya and part of the eastern coast of the island of Hinn\u00F8ya as well as some smaller islands. Located just north of the town of Harstad, the village of Trondenes was the administrative centre of the municipality. That village is also the site of the historic Trondenes Church, the northernmost medieval stone church in Norway.
