Sens dubte, va ser un l\u00EDder excepcional en l'\u00E0mbit de les ci\u00E8ncies f\u00EDsiques del segle xix. Va fer importants treballs en el camp de l'an\u00E0lisi de l'electricitat i la termodin\u00E0mica i va contribuir molt a la unificaci\u00F3 de les disciplines emergents de la f\u00EDsica vers la seva forma moderna. Una de les seves innovacions fou l'establiment d'un zero absolut corresponent a l'abs\u00E8ncia absoluta de calor i pressi\u00F3 d'un gas. Va donar el seu nom a una escala de temperatures, anomenada absoluta, mesurada en k\u00E8lvins (el seu s\u00EDmbol \u00E9s K i \u00E9s l'utilitzat en el sistema internacional d'unitats).
