"The 2022 United States Senate election in Pennsylvania was held on November 8, 2022, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The election was held concurrently with elections for all other Class 3 U.S. senators, elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, and a gubernatorial election. Incumbent Republican Senator Pat Toomey chose to retire after serving two terms; this was the first open Senate seat since 1980. Democratic Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania John Fetterman won the open seat, defeating Republican surgeon and television personality Mehmet Oz. Fetterman became the first Democrat to win this seat since 1962, and his victory marks the first time Democrats were elected to both of the state's Senate seats since 1947. Due to it being an open Republican-held seat in a state won by Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, the seat was seen by many Democrats as the party's best possible Senate pickup in 2022, and the race was seen, correctly, by both political parties as important in determining control of the Senate. In the May 17 primary, Fetterman won the Democratic nomination with 59% of the vote, comfortably defeating his closest rival, U.S. Representative Conor Lamb. Oz narrowly won the Republican primary, with a 0.1% difference between him and businessman David McCormick in second place, subsequently triggering an automatic recount. McCormick conceded the nomination on June 3, making Oz the first Muslim candidate to be nominated by either major party for U.S. Senate. The general election campaign was highly contentious, with both candidates frequently attacking each other. Fetterman accused Oz of being an elitist carpetbagger with a radical anti-abortion stance, while Oz in turn accused Fetterman of being a socialist who was insufficiently committed to fighting crime. Fetterman's health was also a major issue, with the lieutenant governor suffering a stroke days before his primary victory that left him largely incapacitated for two months. Although Fetterman led in most pre-election polls, Oz passed Fetterman in polling as election day approached, leading pundits to predict Oz would win. However, Fetterman won the election comfortably, defeating Oz by a 4.9% margin. This was the only Senate seat in the 2022 cycle to flip from one party to another."@en .
