Duas destas comportas t\u00EAm instalados Volets que servem de descarga auxiliar para o descarregamento de pequenos caudais de cheia, at\u00E9 um m\u00E1ximo de 250 m\u00B3/s. Em correspond\u00EAncia com dois blocos com pilar, na metade esquerda da barragem, existem duas descargas de fundo, blindadas, de sec\u00E7\u00E3o quadrada, que podem ser utilizadas num eventual esvaziamento da albufeira. A barragem tem uma altura de 57 m e um comprimento de coroamento de 400 m. A \u00E1rea total da bacia hidrogr\u00E1fica \u00E9 de 92.050 km\u00B2 e estende-se por 40 km atingindo na extremidade de montante o aproveitamento hidroel\u00E9ctrico da R\u00E9gua. O volume total armazenado \u00E9 de 148.000.000 m\u00B3, sendo por\u00E9m a sua capacidade \u00FAtil somente de 9.000.000 m\u00B3. A cota de reten\u00E7\u00E3o foi prevista atendendo aos problemas de inunda\u00E7\u00E3o e, em especial, \u00E0 conveni\u00EAncia de se evitarem interfer\u00EAncias com o Caminho de Ferro do Douro. A Altura da Queda \u00DAtil Nominal \u00E9 de 31,0 m. A superf\u00EDcie inundada da albufeira \u00E9 952 ha. A central, com uma nave principal de dimens\u00F5es 95x24x26,5 m, disp\u00F5e de 3 grupos Geradores, alimentados por circuitos hidr\u00E1ulicos independentes, equipados cada um com turbina do tipo Kaplan, de eixo vertical de 62.518 kW, acoplada a alternador trif\u00E1sico de 67 MVA. Os transformadores principais encontram-se no edif\u00EDcio da central. O aproveitamento tem uma produ\u00E7\u00E3o m\u00E9dia de 870,6 GWh por ano. Tem ainda uma eclusa de navega\u00E7\u00E3o, que foi a primeira a ser constru\u00EDda em Portugal para navega\u00E7\u00E3o interior. Conjuntamente com as eclusas dos aproveitamentos hidroel\u00E9ctricos do Pocinho, Valeira e R\u00E9gua (a montante) e Crestuma-Lever (a jusante), permite transformar o Rio Douro numa via naveg\u00E1vel de caracter\u00EDsticas internacionais.
