Na marinha mercante, o imediato est\u00E1 integrado e \u00E9 respons\u00E1vel pela superintend\u00EAncia direta da sec\u00E7\u00E3o do conv\u00E9s/se\u00E7\u00E3o de conv\u00E9s, normalmente n\u00E3o interferindo com o servi\u00E7o da sec\u00E7\u00E3o de m\u00E1quinas/se\u00E7\u00E3o de m\u00E1quinas cujo chefe tem uma categoria igual ou mesmo superior \u00E0 sua. Embora trai\u00E7\u00E3o fosse comum, quando em uma tripula\u00E7\u00E3o pirata, o imediato \u00E9 o respons\u00E1vel pela seguran\u00E7a do navio no lugar do capit\u00E3o, sendo o segundo no comando. A designa\u00E7\u00E3o \"imediato\" s\u00F3 \u00E9 atribu\u00EDda aos oficiais. Quando uma fun\u00E7\u00E3o equivalente \u00E9 desempenhada por uma pessoa n\u00E3o pertencendo ao escal\u00E3o dos oficiais, a mesma \u00E9 designada \"segundo de navega\u00E7\u00E3o\". O termo \"imediato\" \u00E9 usado, genericamente, nas marinhas de todos os pa\u00EDses e territ\u00F3rios de L\u00EDngua Portuguesa. Em outros pa\u00EDses, o oficial imediato pode assumir outras designa\u00E7\u00F5es, tais como \"oficial chefe\" (Ingl\u00EAs: chief officer), \"primeiro piloto\" (Ingl\u00EAs: first mate), \"primeiro oficial\" (Alem\u00E3o: Erster Offizier), \"primeiro oficial de conv\u00E9s\" (Espanhol: primer oficial de puente), \"segundo capit\u00E3o\" (Franc\u00EAs: second capitaine) ou \"oficial s\u00E9nior\" (Polaco: starszy oficer). Quando da tripula\u00E7\u00E3o de um navio faz parte um segundo comandante - o que normalmente acontece apenas em grandes navios de passageiros - o imediato \u00E9 apenas o terceiro oficial n\u00E1utico na linha de comando. Neste caso, n\u00E3o \u00E9 ao imediato a quem cabe assumir o comando em caso de impedimento do comandante, mas sim ao segundo comandante. Tradicionalmente, na maioria das marinhas mercantes, o imediato de um navio usa no seu uniforme um distintivo composto por tr\u00EAs gal\u00F5es dourados, enquanto que o comandante usa quatro gal\u00F5es. J\u00E1 nas marinhas de guerra, o imediato normalmente tem uma patente superior \u00E0 de todos os chefes de departamento do navio, podendo superintender em todos eles.
