DELAG was founded on 16 November 1909 as a commercial passenger-carrying offshoot of Zeppelin Luftschiffbau. While the notion did not have the support of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the inventor of the zeppelin, Alfred Colsman, the business manager of Zeppelin Luftschiffbau, gained both funding and promotion for passenger flights from Albert Ballin, the head of the Hamburg America Line. On 19 June 1910, DELAG's first zeppelin, designated LZ 7 and named Deutschland, performed its first flight. Despite its loss on 28 June 1910, the company launched the improved Deutschland II and the LZ 10 Schwaben during the following year. It carried 1,553 paying passengers during its commercial career. By July 1914, one month prior to the start of the First World War, DELAG's Zeppelins had transported a total of 34,028 passengers on 1,588 commercial flights; over these trips, the fleet had accumulated 172,535 kilometres across 3,176 hours of flight. The company's zeppelins were requisitioned by the German Army for military use during the First World War. Shortly after the conflict, DELAG quickly set about relaunching commercial zeppelin operations, however, it was delivered a major setback when two of its airships were surrendered during 1921 as a part of Germany's war reparations. During 1925, restrictions imposed on zeppelin construction under the Treaty of Versailles were relaxed by the Allies, enabling the development of an advanced zeppelin suitable for intercontinental air passenger service. This airship, the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin, was flown for the first time on 18 September 1928. Its introduction enabled DELAG to launch regular, nonstop, transatlantic flights several years before airplanes would be capable of sufficient range to cross the ocean in either direction without stopping. The airship also performed numerous record-breaking flights, including a successful circumnavigation of the globe. DELAG's fortunes were badly damaged by the rise of the Nazis to power in Germany during 1933. "1117831910"^^ . "DELAG staat voor Deutsche Luftschiffahrt Aktien Gesellschaft, het bedrijf dat Graaf von Zeppelin op 16 november 1909 oprichtte om passagiersvluchten met zeppelins uit te voeren. Het was tevens de eerste luchtvaartmaatschappij ter wereld. Het oprichtingskapitaal bedroeg 3 miljoen mark, waarvan het grootste deel door grote steden werd ingebracht, onder aanvoering van Dr. Adickes (Frankfurt am Main) en Marx (D\u00FCsseldorf). De resterende 400.000 mark waren afkomstig van de Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbHuit Friedrichshafen in de vorm van luchtschepen. In 1910 werd met het luchtschip LZ7 Deutschland begonnen met het passagiersvervoer van Frankfurt naar Baden-Baden en naar D\u00FCsseldorf. E\u00E9n jaar later werd voor het eerst de steward ingevoerd op het nieuwe luchtschip LZ10 Schwaben om voor het welzijn van de passagiers te zorgen. Al in 1913 was er een netwerk tussen D\u00FCsseldorf, Baden-Oos, , Gotha, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Dresden en Leipzig ontstaan. De Eerste Wereldoorlog verhinderde echter de geplande aansluiting op de Europese hoofdsteden. Reeds in juli 1914, een maand voor het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, hadden de commerci\u00EBle zeppelins van de DELAG in totaal 34.028 passagiers tijdens 1588 vluchten vervoerd en in 3176 vlieguren een afstand van 172 535 km overbrugd. Met de luchtschepen LZ120 Bodensee en LZ121 Nordstern wilde de DELAG na de Eerste Wereldoorlog vanaf 1919 de Europese steden met elkaar verbinden. LZ120 vloog reeds lijndiensten tussen Friedrichshafen en Berlijn. Beide luchtschepen moesten echter in 1921 aan de overwinnaars van de Eerste Wereldoorlog worden afgestaan: de Bodensee aan Itali\u00EB, die hem omdoopte in Esperia en de Nordstern als M\u00E9diterran\u00E9e aan Frankrijk. Met de LZ127 Graf Zeppelin vloog de DELAG vanaf september 1928 met het succesvolste luchtschip dat ooit gebouwd was. Hiermee kon voor het eerst een regelmatige nonstop trans-Atlantische lijndienst worden onderhouden, lang voordat vliegtuigen hiertoe in staat waren. De Graf Zeppelin was tevens het laatste luchtschip in dienst van de DELAG. In 1935 werd de opgericht. Deze moest met staatssteun als luchtvaartmaatschappij voor zeppelins als de LZ129 dienen.
