Das St\u00FCck wurde etwa 1930 bei Bagdad, m\u00F6glicherweise im Susa-Tempel von Tell Agreb, ausgegraben. Das ist bemerkenswert, da die Proto-Elamiter und Elamiter eher im heutigen Westiran lebten. Der Name ist in zweierlei Hinsicht missverst\u00E4ndlich, Guennol ist nicht der Fundort, sondern die walisische \u00DCbersetzung des Namens Martin, sie geh\u00F6rte n\u00E4mlich lange dem Sammler Alastair Bradley Martin. Das dargestellte Fabelwesen ist kein L\u00F6we, sondern eine Art D\u00E4mon mit weiblichem L\u00F6wenkopf. Alastair Bradley Martin war seit 1948 Besitzer der Statue, ausgestellt wurde sie im Brooklyn Museum. Die Figur ist seit 2007 die teuerste Antiquit\u00E4t aller Zeiten, als sie bei Sotheby\u2019s in New York versteigert wurde. Vierzehn bis achtzehn Millionen US-Dollar waren veranschlagt gewesen, doch ein unbekannter Bieter bekam den Zuschlag bei 57 Millionen.
