Terowongan besar berventilasi pertama di dunia ini terdiri dari sepasang saluran, yang masing-masing menyediakan dua lajur kendaran selebar 8 m. Saluran sebelah utara panjangnya 2,61 km dari ujung ke ujung, sedangkan saluran selatan berukuran lebih pendek, sepanjang 2,55 km. Kedua saluran ini diletakkan di lumpur bawah sungai, yang titik terendahnya sedalam kira-kira 28 m di bawah rata-rata ketinggian air.
