August 1780 in Montauban; \u2020 14. Januar 1867 in Paris) war ein franz\u00F6sischer Maler und einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der offiziellen Kunst im Frankreich des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ingres lernte bei Jacques-Louis David und an der \u00C9cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Er gewann 1801 mit dem Gem\u00E4lde Achill empf\u00E4ngt die Bittgesandtschaft des Agamemnon den angesehenen Prix de Rome, konnte aber in der Folge nicht an diesen Erfolg ankn\u00FCpfen. 1806 trat er das mit dem Preis verbundene Rom-Stipendium an und blieb auch nach dessen Ende in Italien. Seine Werke aus dieser Zeit stie\u00DFen oftmals auf harte Kritik. Erst 1824 kehrte Ingres infolge seines Erfolges beim Salon de Paris nach Frankreich zur\u00FCck und wurde zum anerkannten K\u00FCnstler seiner Zeit. 1825 verlieh ihm der K\u00F6nig das Kreuz der Ehrenlegion, 1829 wurde er zum Professor an der Ecole des Beaux-Arts berufen. Nach einem Misserfolg im Salon des Jahres 1834 beschloss Ingres, in Zukunft nicht mehr dort auszustellen, und kehrte 1835 als Direktor der Acad\u00E9mie de France \u00E0 Rome nach Rom zur\u00FCck. Nach dem Ende seiner dortigen Amtszeit kehrte er 1841 zur\u00FCck und setzte seine Lehrt\u00E4tigkeit an der \u00C9cole des Beaux-Arts fort, zehn Jahre sp\u00E4ter erhielt er dort den Posten eines Direktors. In den letzten Jahren seines Lebens legte Ingres besonderen Wert auf sein k\u00FCnstlerisches Gesamtwerk und die Festigung seines Ruhmes. Er begann 1851 damit, in seiner Heimatstadt mit Schenkungen das ihm gewidmete zu begr\u00FCnden, dem er auch im Nachlass viele Gem\u00E4lde und Zeichnungen von sich und mit Verbindung zu ihm hinterlie\u00DF. Ingres war ein Vertreter des Klassizismus und stand vor allem mit Eug\u00E8ne Delacroix als Maler der franz\u00F6sischen Romantik in starker Konkurrenz. In der Gegenposition zu der von Delacroix vertretenen Malweise wurde Ingres als Bewahrer der Tradition gefeiert. Seine Werke wiesen jedoch auch Vorgriffe auf die Moderne auf. So ordnete er oftmals die Wirklichkeitsdarstellung seiner eigenen Vorstellung unter, was oftmals zu perspektivischen Ungenauigkeiten und anatomisch unm\u00F6glichen Darstellungen f\u00FChrte. Diese subjektiven Einfl\u00FCsse in das Werk wurden Ingres von der Kritik als Unverm\u00F6gen ausgelegt. Ingres fertigte Historiengem\u00E4lde, Portr\u00E4ts und Akte an, f\u00FCr die er meist eine Vielzahl von Vorzeichnungen anfertigte. Dar\u00FCber hinaus gibt es noch eigenst\u00E4ndige Zeichnungen. Er selbst betrachtete seine Historien als wichtigste Gruppe in seinem Werk, der er sich vor allem in seinen Anfangsjahren aufgrund der Notwendigkeit, den Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen, nicht so stark widmen konnte, wie er wollte. Daneben war er ein gefragter Portr\u00E4tmaler, der viele bedeutende Pers\u00F6nlichkeiten seiner Zeit malte.
