En 1938, Leonard Trent devient officier subalterne dans la Royal Air Force apr\u00E8s avoir suivi une formation intensive en pilotage en Nouvelle-Z\u00E9lande. Il est par la suite affect\u00E9 au No. 15 Squadron RAF puis envoy\u00E9 en France au d\u00E9clenchement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Aux commandes d'un Fairey Battle, il effectue durant cette p\u00E9riode des missions de reconnaissance a\u00E9rienne en Allemagne. Apr\u00E8s le retour de son escadron en Angleterre, il participe \u00E0 plusieurs missions de bombardement strat\u00E9gique pendant la bataille de France, efforts de guerre pour lesquels il est r\u00E9compens\u00E9 de la Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). Par la suite, il devient instructeur de vol avant d'int\u00E9grer le 487e Escadron (NZ) en ao\u00FBt 1942. Abattu au-dessus d'Amsterdam lors d'un raid a\u00E9rien baptis\u00E9 Operation Ramrod 16, Leonard Trent est fait prisonnier de guerre le 3 mai 1943. Apr\u00E8s la guerre, il re\u00E7oit la Croix de Victoria pour ses exploits durant l'op\u00E9ration Ramrod 16. Il continue \u00E0 servir dans la RAF et commande le 214e Escadron pendant la crise du canal de Suez. Au terme de sa carri\u00E8re militaire en juin 1965, Leonard Trent s'installe en Australie. "Group Captain Leonard Henry Trent, VC, DFC (14 April 1915 \u2013 19 May 1986) was a New Zealand aviator, senior Royal Air Force officer, and recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in Nelson, Trent obtained a short-term commission in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1938 after receiving flight training in New Zealand. After travelling to England, he was posted to No. 15 Squadron RAF and was sent to France shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, flying Fairey Battles on photo-reconnaissance missions into Germany. After his squadron returned to England and converted to Bristol Blenheims, he flew several bombing missions during the Battle of France for which he was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). Afterwards he spent several months on instructing duties before being posted to No. 487 (NZ) Squadron in August 1942, which operated Lockheed Venturas. He was shot down over Amsterdam while on a bombing mission, codenamed Operation Ramrod 16, on 3 May 1943, becoming a prisoner of war. After the war, he was awarded the VC for his actions during Ramrod 16. He continued to serve with the RAF and was commander of No. 214 Squadron during the Suez Crisis.
