Tot zijn tijdgenoten behoren onder andere Myron van Eleutherae, Polykleitos en Sophocles. Hij zou opgeleid zijn door Hegias en Ageladas. Men weet niet veel over zijn leven. Hij werd geboren te Athene in het begin van de 5de eeuw, circa 490 voor Christus. Sommigen betwijfelen dit en dateren hem een decennium vroeger of later. Toen Pericles in 449 voor Christus aan de macht kwam, kreeg zijn goede vriend Phidias de leiding over zijn artistieke ondernemingen. Hij was onder meer bouwmeester van het Parthenon dat Pericles liet bouwen tussen 447 voor Christus en 432 voor Christus. Door zijn vriendschap met Pericles, werd hij het onderwerp van jaloezie en kreeg hij veel vijanden. Toen Pericles in ongenade viel, werd ook Phidias het slachtoffer. Hij werd in 438 voor Christus beschuldigd van het verduisteren van staatsgoud. Wat er toen juist gebeurde is niet helemaal duidelijk. Ofwel werd hij in de gevangenis opgesloten kort na 438 voor Christus en stierf hij in Athene, ofwel ging hij naar Olympia in 438/432 voor Christus om zijn beeld van Zeus te maken en stierf daar dan tien of vijftien jaar later.
