Issu d'une esp\u00E8ce de coronavirus bien implant\u00E9e chez les chauve-souris (Rhinolophes), le SARS-CoV-1 infecte civettes, blaireaux et humains. Il s'agit d'un virus \u00E0 ARN monocat\u00E9naire de polarit\u00E9 positive (groupe IV de la classification Baltimore) appartenant au genre des Betacoronavirus. Ce virus envelopp\u00E9 pr\u00E9sente un g\u00E9nome long d'environ 29,7 kilobases, ce qui est l'un des plus grands g\u00E9nomes parmi les virus \u00E0 ARN. On y a identifi\u00E9 13 g\u00E8nes codant 14 prot\u00E9ines. La r\u00E9gion 5'-UTR compte 265 nucl\u00E9otides tandis que la r\u00E9gion 3'-UTR en compte 342.
