Lindbergh opinava que era millor disposar d'un sol motor, ja que si a un avi\u00F3 amb c\u00E0rrega m\u00E0xima li fallava un motor, aleshores el segon motor tampoc podria mantenir-lo en l'aire. A m\u00E9s, un avi\u00F3 amb dos o tres motors era m\u00E9s propens a tenir fallades en algun d'ells i era m\u00E9s pesant. Per tal de portar el m\u00E0xim combustible possible es va sacrificar tot, fins i tot la comoditat del pilot i la visibilitat exterior. El dip\u00F2sit de combustible principal va quedar allotjat davant del lloc de comandament, ja que Lindbergh no va voler tenir-lo darrere i c\u00F3rrer el risc de quedar atrapat entre el motor i el tanc en cas d'un aterratge accidentat. D'aquesta forma, Lindbergh va sacrificar la visibilitat cap endavant, que va quedar redu\u00EFda al que podia veure a trav\u00E9s d'un periscopi lateral. La capacitat total de combustible va ser de 1.705 l, el que va significar un pes superior a la meitat del pes total de l'avi\u00F3, que va ser de 2.380 kg. L'avi\u00F3 va ser dissenyat en totes les seves peces de manera que ofer\u00EDs la m\u00EDnima resist\u00E8ncia a l'aire i que el seu pes fos tamb\u00E9 el m\u00E9s baix possible. The Pennsylvania introduced the Spirit of St. Louis on June 15, 1927, replacing the (eastbound) and (westbound); that September its schedule was 24 hr 50 min each way. The name honored the airplane Spirit of St. Louis, flown the month before by Charles Lindbergh from New York to Paris. The Spirit of St. Louis remained in service through the inception of Amtrak, who extended it to Kansas City, Missouri along the Missouri Pacific Railroad main line. The train had a competitor in the New York Central Railroad's Southwestern Limited, also running from New York to St. Louis. Amtrak also added a branch from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C., via York, Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland.
