A primeira esp\u00E9cie, X. bocki, foi descoberta em 1915 por Sixten Bock, mas a descri\u00E7\u00E3o oficial foi feita somente em 1949 por Einar Westblad. J\u00E1 em 2016 o pesquisador Greg Rouse, do centro de oceanografia Scripps, nos EUA, descobriu quatro novas esp\u00E9cies no fundo do Pac\u00EDfico que possibilitou o estudo mais detalhado desse animal. Com minissubmarinos remotos, foi poss\u00EDvel filmar as criaturas pela primeira vez. A investiga\u00E7\u00E3o identificou uma nova e grande esp\u00E9cie, com mais de 20 cm de comprimento, batizada como Xenoturbella monstrosa. O animal foi registrado a quase 3 km de profundidade, no golfo da Calif\u00F3rnia (M\u00E9xico). E tamb\u00E9m a Xenoturbella churro: nomeada pela semelhan\u00E7a com o tradicional doce frito. Com as novas inclus\u00F5es \u00E0 fam\u00EDlia, os pesquisadores puderam realizar testes gen\u00E9ticos mais completos, e refor\u00E7ar a hip\u00F3tese de que esses animais formam um grupo ate ent\u00E3o desconhecido de organismos bilaterais. Sua posi\u00E7\u00E3o taxon\u00F4mica t\u00EAm sido considerada enigm\u00E1tica desde o descobrimento da esp\u00E9cie, que foi inicialmente posicionada entre os platelmintos, pr\u00F3ximo a plan\u00E1ria. O g\u00EAnero foi relacionado com os moluscos, mas posteriormente descobriu-se que o material estava contaminado com o DNA de moluscos. Em 2003, um estudo molecular (DNA) revelou que o g\u00EAnero representa um grupo de deuterost\u00F4mios primitivos, posicionando-o num filo pr\u00F3prio, o Xenoturbellida.
