On 25 December 2012, an Antonov An-72 military transport aircraft operated by the Kazakh Armed Forces crashed about 20 km (12 mi) from the city of Shymkent, Kazakhstan, where the aircraft was preparing to land. All 27 people on board died in the crash.

Stroj, který letěl z hlavního města Astany, se chystal na přistání v Šymkentu, když v prostoru poslední zatáčky (do osy dráhy), s vysunutými podvozky, narazil za tmy a sněžení do svahu rokle. Na palubě zahynulo 27 osob – sedm členů posádky a dvacet příslušníků ochrany kazachstánských hranic včetně velitele plukovníka Turganbeka Stambekova a jeho manželky.
