The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is a mutually agreed instrument voluntarily acceded to by the member states of the African Union (AU) as a self-monitoring mechanism. It was founded in 2003. The mandate of the APRM is to encourage conformity with regards to political, economic and corporate governance values, codes and standards, among African countries and the objectives in socio-economic development as well as to ensure monitoring and evaluation of AU Agenda 2063 and SDGs 2030.

Afrikanische Staaten können im APRM-Prozess ihre Lage selbstkritisch beurteilen und sich gleichzeitig von anderen Staaten nach bestimmten Kriterien überprüfen lassen (Peer-Review).Ziel ist eine beschleunigte nachhaltige Entwicklung afrikanischer Staaten garantiert durch die Einhaltung von Good Governance-Kriterien. Der APRM soll vor allem zu einer erhöhten nationalen politischen Effektivität in den vier Bereichen: Democracy and political governance, Economic governance and management, Corporate Governance und Socio-economic development führen.
