Dotat d'una bella veu de baríton abandonà la professió de comerciant per a dedicar-se a l'estudi del cant, sota la direcció de Stockhausen, a Frankfurt. Es presentà en públic en el teatre de Bayreuth, assolint un èxit clamorós en la part del Wotan de la Trilogia wagneriana, especialitat en la qual va mantenir-se molts anys, sempre amb el mateix èxit, en les principals escenes d'Europa i Amèrica. He had a voice of enormous proportions and is most remembered for his association with the music dramas of Richard Wagner, especially the Ring Cycle, The Mastersingers of Nuremberg and Parsifal. After leaving the Metropolitan Opera, van Rooy became the leading Wagnerian baritone of the Frankfurt Opera; but by this juncture his voice had deteriorated prematurely due to vigorous over-use and his willingness to sing roles with a higher range than was ideal for his sonorous instrument. Een van de hoogtepunten was een optreden in de rol van Wotan in de operaserie Der Ring des Nibelungen van Richard Wagner tijdens de Bayreuther Festspiele van 1897, dirigent Felix Weingartner had Cosima Wagner op zijn mooi stem gewezen. - Anton van Rooy (1 January 1870 – 28 November 1932) was a Dutch bass-baritone. He had a voice of enormous proportions and is most remembered for his association with the music dramas of Richard Wagner, especially the Ring Cycle, The Mastersingers of Nuremberg and Parsifal. Born in Rotterdam, van Rooy studied with the famous voice teacher Julius Stockhausen in Frankfurt. He made his operatic debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1897, singing Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen. The year 1898 saw his debuts in Berlin and at the Royal Opera House in London; and on 14 December that same year he sang for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City, as Wotan in Die Walküre. He remained with the Met until 1908, during which time he was heard in all the leading baritone Wagnerian roles. Most notably, he created Amfortas in the American premiere of Parsifal in 1903. Four years later, he created the part of John the Baptist in the initial New York production of Richard Strauss's then controversial opera Salome. Van Rooy also continued to sing regularly at Bayreuth until 1903, when he was banned by Cosima Wagner from any further performances at the festival, because the Met performances of Parsifal that he had participated in breached German copyright law. His appearances in London spanned the years 1898-1913. He made gramophone discs and cylinder recordings, too, and was a noted song recitalist and soloist in oratorio. Although the acoustically recorded discs and cylinders that van Rooy cut during the early 1900s were incapable of capturing the full majesty of his voice, they do demonstrate the strength of his high notes, the dark beauty of his tone and the sensitivity of his phrasing. They show why, to quote the Oxford Dictionary of Opera (second edition), "he was considered the finest [Hans] Sachs, Kurwenal and Wotan of the first decade" of the 20th century. After leaving the Metropolitan Opera, van Rooy became the leading Wagnerian baritone of the Frankfurt Opera; but by this juncture his voice had deteriorated prematurely due to vigorous over-use and his willingness to sing roles with a higher range than was ideal for his sonorous instrument. Hij was zoon van makelaar Joannes Antonius van Rooy en Maria Petronella Schrijver, wonende aan de Kruiskade in Rotterdam. Het zag er in eerste instantie niet naar uit dat hij de muziekwereld in zou stappen. Hij was onder invloed van zijn ouder voorbestemd om koopman te worden. Zijn liefhebberij muziek begon daarentegen vroeg. Hij was koorknaap in de Sint Dominicuskerk (verloren gegaan in de Tweede Wereldoorlog), zong in het koor van opleidingsinstituut Rolduc en het koor van de Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst in Rotterdam. Op 22-jarige leeftijd begon hij aan serieuze zanglessen bij in Frankfurt am Main. Het was ook daar dat men van zijn eerste optreden kon genieten; hij was toen 24/25 jaar oud. Hij viel dusdanig op dat hij aanbiedingen kreeg van diverse operahuizen in Nederland, Duitsland, Oostenrijk, Frankrijk en Zwitserland. Een van de hoogtepunten was een optreden in de rol van Wotan in de operaserie Der Ring des Nibelungen van Richard Wagner tijdens de Bayreuther Festspiele van 1897, dirigent Felix Weingartner had Cosima Wagner op zijn mooi stem gewezen. Hij zong daarvoor en daarna bij diverse operagezelschappen, hij was te vinden in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Londen (Covent Garden, 1898-1913), Berlijn, etc. Ook zijn optreden tijdens de Festspiele in 1900 oogstten veel lof, maar het zou zijn laatste keer worden aldaar. Hij zong vanaf 1898 tot 1908 tijdens het winterseizoen voornamelijk in het Metropolitan Opera in New York. Een rol van Amfortas in Parsifal bracht hem in onmin bij de familie Wagner; er was geen overeenkomst over de auteursrechten bij die uitvoeringen. Dat weerhield hem niet zijn eigen gang te gaan, in Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Hij sloot zich aan bij het gezelschap van het in München, dat hem veel eer zou brengen in de vormt van een Luitpoldkruis voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen. In Nederland raakte hij uit beeld, mede doordat hij zijn loopbaan afsloot in of vlak na de Eerste Wereldoorlog . Nederland had hem wel geëerd met de benoeming tot officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. Zijn stem is middels een beperkt aantal opnamen bewaard gebleven. Volgens Het Vaderland van 28 november 1932 overleed hij de dag daarvoor in een kliniek in München aan longklachten, ook rouwadvertenties vermelden 27 november als overlijdensdatum. (nl)
