- De Casio VL-1 (ook wel VL-Tone genoemd) is een monofone speelgoedsynthesizer die voor het eerst in 1981 werd geproduceerd. De synthesizer kan een stem tegelijk ten gehore brengen die begeleid kan worden door een aantal eenvoudige ritmes. De klankopwekking is digitaal. Naast de vijf ingebouwde geluiden (piano, fluit, orgel, fantasy en viool) kan er een eigen geluid geprogrammeerd worden. Opvallend is de aanwezigheid van een eenvoudige ingebouwde rekenmachine. Bekende artiesten die geluiden uit de VL-1 hebben gebruikt zijn Human League (Dare!) en Trio (Da Da Da!). (nl)

- Der Casio VL-1 (auch bekannt als Casio VL-Tone) war der erste Synthesizer der japanischen Firma Casio aus der VL-Reihe. Dieses sehr preisgünstige Instrument (Preisempfehlung in Deutschland 149 DM) wurde von 1981 bis 1984 hergestellt. Einer der vier Kashio-Brüder, die Casio 1946 gründeten, entwickelte den sehr kostengünstigen LSI-Chip, der zur Musikerzeugung genutzt wurde. Auf Drängen des Managements der Firma Casio wurde die Funktionsarmut des Chips durch einen eingebauten Taschenrechner kompensiert. (de)
- The VL-1 was the first instrument of Casio's VL-Tone product line, and is sometimes referred to as the VL-Tone. It combined a calculator, a monophonic synthesizer, and sequencer. Released in June 1979, it was the first commercial digital synthesizer, selling for $69.95. The VL-1 was followed by the VL-10, a very similar machine in a smaller unit, and the VL-5, a polyphonic version, capable of playing four notes simultaneously, but lacking the VL-1's synthesizer section due to the removal of the calculator mode. - Casio VL-1 adalah salah satu dari rangkaian penyintesis VL-Tone buatan Casio. Produk ini berupa penyintesis yang dipadukan dengan kalkulator. Dibuat oleh Toshio Kashio, seorang musisi amatir dan salah satu anggota keluarga Kashio, pendiri perusahaan Casio, dan diproduksi mulai tahun 1979. Alat musik ini lebih ditujukan untuk anak-anak, terlihat dari ukuran kibornya yang relatif kecil dibanding ukuran kibor pada umumnya. Harganya relatif murah dan mutu suaranya terbilang rendah sebagai suatu alat musik. Semula alat musik ini diragukan akan bisa sukses dalam penjualan, sehingga perusahaan merasa perlu menyertakan kalkulator di dalamnya agar lebih menarik.
