Chen Li (1810–1882) was a Cantonese scholar of the evidential research school, known for his contributions to historical Chinese phonology. Chen Li's family originally came from Shaoxing prefecture in Zhejiang province, moving to Nanjing in the early Ming dynasty.Chen's grandfather moved to Guangzhou, where his two sons remained after his death.Chen Li was the first in his family to register as a Guangzhou resident.He passed the provincial examination in 1832, but was unsuccessful in the imperial examination seven times.He also sat examinations at the in Guangzhou, headed by Ruan Yuan, and taught there as co-director for several decades from 1840.

  • Chen Li (chinesisch 陳澧, Pinyin Chén Lǐ, 1810–1882) war ein chinesischer Linguist und konfuzianischer Gelehrter der Qing-Dynastie. Er analysierte unter anderem die Fanqie in dem chinesischen Wörterbuch . Dabei bestimmte er, welche Anlaut- und Auslaut-Schriftzeichen dieselben Laute repräsentieren, und zählte dadurch die Anlaute und Auslaute des zugrundeliegenden Systems auf. Das gleiche wurde im 20. Jahrhundert von dem Schweden Bernhard Karlgren (1889–1978) wiederholt, der damit das Mittelchinesisch rekonstruierte. Karlgren hatte zu dem Zeitpunkt aber keine Ahnung von dem Werk Chen Lis. (de)
  • 陳 澧(ちん れい、Chen Li、1810年 ‐ 1882年)は、中国清代後期の儒学者・考証学者。字は蘭甫。 広東省広州府番禺県出身。1832年に挙人となり、河源県訓導となった。のち、阮元が建設した書院・学海堂の学長を数十年にわたって務め、晩年は菊坡精舎の主講となった。天文・地理・楽律・算術・篆隷などあらゆる学問に通じていた。音韻学者として『』を著し、中古音の声母系統を研究した。儒学者としては漢学・宋学どちらも尊重する態度をとった。著書に『声律通考』『漢志水道図説』『漢儒通義』『老子注』『公孫龍子注』、未完の『東塾読書記』などがある。 (ja)
