A la mort de la seva cosina Berta de Roergue el 1065, Guillem IV de Tolosa va heretar el comtat de Narbona. El seu germà i successor, Ramon IV, va elevar la condició del títol a duc. El fill i successor de Ramon IV, Alfons Jordà, també va emprar el títol amb l'aprovació reial (com Amphusus dux Narbonensis provincie); Alfons encunyarà moneda narbonesa amb la inscripció DUX ANFOS. El seu fill, Ramon V, el va situar abans que els altres títols denotant el seu prestigi (probablement relacionat amb la seva connexió amb el passat romà). La família raimondina va quedar desposseïda d'aquest títol amb la Croada albigesa. El 1215 Felip II de França va concedir a Simó IV de Montfort, ja comte de Leicester, els títols de duc de Narbona i comte de Tolosa, confirmant així les conquestes que havia aconseguit durant la croada. Arnau Amalric, aleshores arquebisbe de Narbona, també va reclamar la dignitat ducal i va entrar en una disputa amb Simó que no es va resoldre abans que aquest morís el 1218 mentre assetjava la ciutat de Tolosa. Das betreffende Gebiet entsprach in seinem Umfang etwa der ehemaligen französischen Region Languedoc-Roussillon. Mit einer realen Territorialherrschaft war der Titel des Herzogs von Narbonne nicht verbunden. Das Gebiet, welches das Herzogtum Narbonne ausmachen sollte, war im 9. Jahrhundert schon einmal in der unter Karl dem Großen gebildeten gotischen Mark des fränkischen Reichs zusammengefasst, welche aber schnell zerfiel. Letzter Träger des markgräflichen Titels war Herzog Wilhelm I. der Fromme von Aquitanien († 918). Nach dessen Tod entfaltete die Grafenfamilie von Toulouse ihre Dominanz über den Raum des heutigen Südostfrankreich. (de)

The prestige of the title probable attached to the fact that Narbonne had been a capital of the ancient Roman administration of the eponymous province of Gallia Narbonensis. On the death of his cousin Bertha of Rouergue in 1065, William IV of Toulouse inherited the county of Narbonne. His brother and successor, Raymond IV, elevated the status to that of duke. Raymond's son and successor, Alfonso Jordan, also employed the title with royal approval (as Amphusus dux Narbonensis provincie) and his son, Raymond V placed it first before his other titles as an implication of its importance (probably related to its Roman connection). The family was only dispossessed of the title when Raymond VI brought down the wrath of the French king for his supposed support of Cathar heresies. In 1215, following the successes of the Albigensian Crusade, Philip II of France granted Simon IV de Montfort, already Earl of Leicester, the titles of Duke of Narbonne and Count of Toulouse. Arnauld Amaury, then Archbishop of Narbonne, also claimed the ducal dignity and entered a dispute with Simon which was not resolved before the latter's death (1218). The title thenceforth belonged to the archdiocese. (en)
