The Electro-Theremin is an electronic musical instrument developed by trombonist Paul Tanner and amateur inventor Bob Whitsell in the late 1950s to produce a sound to mimic that of the theremin. The instrument features a tone and portamento similar to that of the theremin, but with a different control mechanism. It consisted of a sine wave generator with a knob that controlled the pitch, placed inside a wooden box. The pitch knob was attached to a slider on the outside of the box with some string. The player would move the slider, thus turning the knob to the desired frequency, with the help of markings drawn on the box. This contrasts with the theremin, which a performer plays without touching as two antennae sense the position and movement of the performer's hands.

Entwickelt worden war das Tannerin durch die Studiomusiker Paul Tanner und Bob Whitsell im Jahr 1958 und auf den Einsatz im Studio abgestimmt. Dort konnte der Musiker die Tonhöhe verändern, indem er einen Regler auf einer Oberfläche hin- und herschob. Im Gegensatz zum Theremin erzeugt das Tannerin einen fast reinen Sinuston. Die Lautstärke ließ sich durch einen Knopf an der Seite des Geräts verstellen. Nachdem die Beach Boys dieses Instrument samt Musiker für die Studioaufnahmen von Good Vibrations benutzt hatten, brauchten sie ein weiteres Gerät, das die Gitarristen live auf Tournee spielen konnten. und Robert Moog kamen auf die Idee, den vorhandenen Regler mit einem zusätzlichen Band zu versehen, auf dem sie die jeweilige entsprechende Note aufmalten. Це відрізняє інструмент від терменвокса, управління яким здійснювалося рухами рук у повітрі навколо антен інструменту. Таннер грав на своєму інструменті на кількох саундтреках а також записав альбом, названий Music from Outer Space. Напевно найвідомішим записом за участю Таннера, де він грав на електротерменвоксі, стали три композиції гурту The Beach Boys: «I Just Wasn't Made for These Times» «» та «Wild Honey.» Електротерменвокс Таннера існував лише в одному екземплярі. У 1960-х роках Таннер продав свій інструмент з розвитком можливостей синтезаторів. В 1999 Том Полк сконструював нову версію електротермінвокса, яку назвав Таннерин.
