The Ethiopian movement is a religious movement that began in southern Africa towards the end of the 19th and early 20th century, when two groups broke away from the Anglican and Methodist churches. One of the main reasons for breaking away was the growing idea that Africa had little to no history before the European colonisation of the continent, leaving many Africans upset at the prospect of their heritage and culture being erased through colonialism. L'obiettivo è riunire sotto la monarchia etiope tutte le popolazioni nere, in un movimento di emancipazione non solo politico, ma anche spirituale e culturale. Nei primi del Novecento, infatti, gli etiopisti, guidati da Marcus Garvey, il cui ministero è spesso assimilato dai rastafariani a quello di Giovanni Battista precursore di Cristo, cominciarono a proiettare sull'Etiopia una viva attesa messianica. - Ethiopian Church var ett kristet trossamfund i Sydafrika, grundat i november 1892 av Mangena Maake Mokone, Samuel Brander och några andra pastorer. Mokone hade samma år lämnat Wesleyan Methodist Church med hänvisning till rassegregation, dåliga löner och bristande respekt för svarta pastorer inom denna kyrka. Snart anslöt sig även förkunnare som J Z Tantsi, J G Xaba, Marcus Gabashane, och James Mata Dwane till den nya Ethiopian Church. De följande åren bildades en uppsjö olika "etiopiska" kyrkor, bland annat 1904. (sv)

- The Ethiopian movement is a religious movement that began in southern Africa towards the end of the 19th and early 20th century, when two groups broke away from the Anglican and Methodist churches. One of the main reasons for breaking away was the growing idea that Africa had little to no history before the European colonisation of the continent, leaving many Africans upset at the prospect of their heritage and culture being erased through colonialism. Later in the 19th century, many Africans who found themselves in America due to slavery found solace in a passage of the bible speaking of Ethiopia which connected them to their lands and gave them hope of blacks being able to one day self govern. Their interpretations of the Biblical passage (Psalm 68:31): "Ethiopia shall soon stretch forth its hands unto God" (in the original Hebrew, actually כּוש Cush) united them to one another and also to their homes and cultures. The term was later given a much wider interpretation by Bengt Sundkler, whose book Bantu Prophets in South Africa was the first comprehensive study of African Independent Churches (AICs). Två kvinnliga släktingar till Mokone, Kate och Charlotte Maneye studerade i USA och kom där i kontakt med African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC). Man informerade Mokone om detta samfund som leddes av afro-amerikaner. Ethiopian Church utsåg Mata Dwane att resa till USA och förhandla om en anslutning till AMEC. Dwane återvände med befogenhet att inviga pastorerna inom Ethiopian Church till tjänst inom AMEC och man beslutade 1896 att formellt ansluta kyrkan till AMEC. Ethiopian Church hade då cirka 3 000 medlemmar och tjugo pastorer. 1898 besökte den amerikanske biskopen Turner Sydafrika och ordinerade Mokone till äldste inom AMEC.Men snart uppstod splittring inom AMEC. Redan 1899 samlades Dwane, M Mpumlwane med flera i Queenstown och bildade Order of Ethiopia. De följande åren bildades en uppsjö olika "etiopiska" kyrkor, bland annat 1904. (sv)
