- Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are two sword-and-sorcery heroes appearing in stories written by American author Fritz Leiber. They are the protagonists of what are probably Leiber's best-known stories. One of his motives in writing them was to have a couple of fantasy heroes closer to true human nature than the likes of Howard's Conan the Barbarian or Burroughs's Tarzan. (en)

Ces protagonistes sont mentionnés pour la première fois en 1934 dans une lettre de Harry Otto Fischer à Fritz Leiber, un écrivain de fantasy, qui aurait inventé le terme « sword and sorcery ». Leiber a consacré une grande partie de sa vie à ce cycle, qu'il a toujours gardé en tête et sur lequel il a beaucoup travaillé. (fr)

I due personaggi vivono nel mondo immaginario di Nehwon, in particolare nella metropoli di Lankhmar, e di professione sono avventurieri erranti: talvolta si guadagnano da vivere come mercenari e talatra come banditi, in generale trascorrono le loro esistenze bevendo, festeggiando, corteggiando, lottando, rubando e giocando d'azzardo, e raramente si fanno scrupoli sui propri datori di lavoro. - Fafhrd en de Grijze Muizer (Engels: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser) zijn twee Sword & Sorcery helden uit de Zwaarden-serie van de schrijver Fritz Leiber. Het eerste Zwaarden-verhaal verscheen in 1939 en het laatste in 1988. De karakters van Fafhrd en de Grijze Muizer zijn duidelijk geïnspireerd op Conan de Barbaar van Robert E. Howard, maar de verhalen zijn meer vergelijkbaar met de (later verschenen) Stervende aarde verhalen van Jack Vance. (nl)
