Anteriorment formava part del comtat de Lofa i es subdividia en els districtes de Gbarma i Bopolu. Un cop constituït com a comtat independent, es va reorganitzar en sis districtes: Gbarma, Kongba, Bopolu, Belle, Bokomu i Gounwolaila. La ciutat de Bopolu és la capital administrativa del comtat. Gbarpolu County bildades efter en administrativ förändring år 2003 där de två lagstadgade distrikten Bopolu och Gbarma slogs samman till ett. Gbarpolu County delas in i sex distrikt, 11 hövdingdömen och 27 klaner. Distrikten är Bopolu, Gbarma, Kongba, Belle, Gou-Nwolala och Bokomu. I Gbarpolu County finns också:
