- The Germanic substrate hypothesis attempts to explain the purportedly distinctive nature of the Germanic languages within the context of the Indo-European languages. Based on the elements of Common Germanic vocabulary and syntax which do not seem to have cognates in other Indo-European languages, it claims that Proto-Germanic may have been either a creole or a contact language that subsumed a non-Indo-European substrate language, or a hybrid of two quite different Indo-European languages, mixing the centum and satem types. Which culture or cultures may have contributed the substrate material is an ongoing subject of academic debate and study. (en)

- De hypothese dat het Germaans een voor-Indo-Europees substraat heeft, is een poging de opmerkelijke plaats te verklaren die de Germaanse talen binnen het verband van de Indo-Europese talen innemen. De theorie is zeker niet algemeen aanvaard. In het kort komt deze erop neer dat het Germaans ontstaan zou zijn in een proces van creolisatie tussen sprekers van een Indo-Europees dialect en sprekers van een oudere voor-Indo-Europese taal. Germaans zou zo een contacttaal zijn met een substraat van voor-Indo-Europese herkomst. De culturele en etnische identiteit van de sprekers van de veronderstelde voor-IE-substraattaal blijft onderwerp van academische discussie en onderzoek. Voorname kandidaten voor de substraatcultuur zijn de Ertebøllecultuur, trechterbekercultuur en de bandkeramische cultuur. (nl)
- L'hypothèse du substrat en germanique a fait l'objet d'un essai qui tente d'expliquer la nature distincte des langues germaniques à l'intérieur du contexte de la famille des langues indo-européennes (IE). Selon cette hypothèse, les éléments du vocabulaire germanique commun et la forme syntaxique qui ne semble pas posséder d'origine indo-européenne démontrent que le proto-germanique est une langue créole. La langue proto-germanique (langue reconstituée) se verrait comme une synthèse. Cette synthèse serait le résultat du contact linguistique de locuteurs indo-européens avec un substrat non indo-européen. (fr)

Secondo questa teoria alcuni elementi comuni dei vocabolari delle lingue germaniche e alcune loro forme sintattiche, che non sembrano avere un'origine indoeuropea, dimostrerebbero che il protogermanico sia una lingua creola, nata dalla lingua di contatto tra i parlanti indoeuropei e il substrato linguistico parlato dagli antenati dei parlanti del protogermanico.
