Fu il primo grande scontro navale delle guerre della rivoluzione francese del quale entrambe le parti reclameranno la vittoria. In effetti, se i francesi persero sette navi di linea, riuscirono però a far arrivare in porto un convoglio proveniente dagli Stati Uniti carico di generi alimentari di importanza vitale, ottenendo perciò una vittoria strategica a fronte di una sconfitta tattica.
