| - The Grand Sanhedrin was a Jewish high court convened in Europe by Napoleon to give legal sanction to the principles expressed by an assembly of Jewish notables in answer to the twelve questions submitted to it by the government. The name was chosen to imply that the Grand Sanhedrin had the authority of the original Sanhedrin that had been the main legislative and judicial body of the Jewish people in classical antiquity and late antiquity. - Le Grand Sanhédrin est une cour suprême juive créée le 10 décembre 1806 comprenant soixante-et-onze rabbins et notables. Il a été convoqué par Napoléon Ier, en séance solennelle à Paris le 9 février 1807 afin de donner une sanction religieuse aux principes exprimés par l'Assemblée des notables en réponse aux douze questions qui lui avaient été soumises par le gouvernement. Le nom faisait référence au Sanhédrin, le principal corps législatif et judiciaire du peuple juif jusqu'à l'Antiquité tardive. - Napoleon I riep in zijn decreet van 30 mei 1806 een Algemene Joodse Vergadering ter voorbereiding van een "Grand Sanhedrin" bijeen, de opvolger van het na de verwoesting van de tempel van Jeruzalem door Titus in het jaar 70 niet meer bijeengekomen Sanhedrin. Afgevaardigden van alle Joodse gemeenten binnen de Franse machtssfeer werden door de prefecten aangewezen.De prefecten hadden opdracht gekregen om daarbij vooral Sefardische Joden te benoemen.
