The name Hercules was chosen for its associations of durability and robustness. The company was founded by Edmund and Harry Crane and started life in Coventry Street, Birmingham, England, initially producing 25 bicycles a week.

Hercules was intussen eigendom van Raleigh en deze firma besloot in 1961 de Hercules productie stop te zetten. * Voor andere merken met de naam Hercules, zie Hercules (Australië) - Hercules (Derby) - Hercules (Neurenberg). * Zowel de naam "British Cycle Corporation" als de overgang naar Raleigh Industries duidt er op dat dit bedrijf ook fietsen produceerde. Men moet tenslotte ook de periode dat geen motorfietsen werden geproduceerd (1914 tot 1955) hebben overbrugd. (nl)
