Οι υπηρεσίες αυτές, που στελεχώνονται από στρατιωτικό και πολιτικό επιστημονικό και τεχνικό προσωπικό, εκδίδουν τους ναυτικούς χάρτες, δίδουν διάφορες ναυτιλιακές οδηγίες, σε μορφή αγγελιών, εδίδουν διάφορα βοηθήματα, π.χ. πλοηγούς, λιμενοδείκτες κ.λπ., μελετώντας παράλληλα διάφορα φαινόμενα π.χ. παλίρροιες, σεισμογενή κύματα, (τσουνάμι), μετακινήσεις άμμου βυθού κ.λπ.
