The Irish language was once widely spoken on the island of Newfoundland before largely disappearing there by the early 20th century. The language was introduced through mass immigration by Irish speakers, chiefly from counties Waterford, Tipperary and Cork. Local place names in the Irish language include Newfoundland (Talamh an Éisc, Land of the Fish) and St. John's (Baile Sheáin) Ballyhack (Baile Hac), Cappahayden (Ceapach Éidín), Kilbride and St. Bride's (Cill Bhríde), Duntara, Port Kirwan and Skibbereen (Scibirín). The dialect of Irish spoken in Newfoundland is said to resemble the Munster Irish of the 18th century.

(ca)
  • Ternuako irlandera (irlanderaz Gaeilge Thalamh an Éisc eta ingelesaz Newfoundland Irish) Kanadako Ternua uhartean mintzatu eta galduta edo galtzear dagoen irlanderaren dialekto bat izan zen. Ternuako irlanderaren azken hiztunak bizi izan ziren. Ternuako irlanderak Irlandako hego-mendebaldean mintzatzen den antz handia zuen, Ternuako eremu hartara joan ziren irlandar etorkinak nagusiki Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Tipperary eta Cork konderrietakoak baiziren. • Tá stair sách fada ag an nGaeilge i gCeanada. Ba é Talamh an Éisc an t-aon áit amháin lasmuigh d’Éirinn ar mhair sí chomh fada sin, ó lár an 18ú haois go dtí lár an 20ú haois, agus canúint ar leith ann a d’eascair, is dócha, ó Ghaolainn na nDéise. Tá an chanúint sin marbh anois, cé go bhfuil Gaeilge á múineadh ina lán ollscoileanna i gCeanada le tamall anuas agus go bhfuil scata díograiseoirí ag iarraidh í a chur á labhairt arís. (ga)
(zh)
