Kethoprak) adalah sejenis seni pentas drama tradisional yang diyakini berasal dari Surakarta dan berkembang pesat di Yogyakarta, oleh karena itu kesenian ini sering disebut sebagai Ketoprak Mataram. Tema cerita dalam sebuah pertunjukan ketoprak bermacam-macam. Biasanya diambil dari cerita legenda atau sejarah Jawa, meski juga ada cerita fiksi. Banyak pula diambil cerita dari atau berseting luar negeri (yang terkenal adalah cerita sampek engtay). Tetapi tema cerita tidak pernah diambil dari repertoar cerita epos (wiracarita): Ramayana dan Mahabharata. (in)

Las compañías de Ketoprak suelen adquirir o alquilar la propiedad de un edificio que usan para sus representaciones, o pueden viajar por diferentes aldeas. Las compañías de ketoprak que viajan se llaman kethoprak tobong, o también ketoprak tonil. Pueden considerarse como la tradición teatral popular más común en Java. El espectáculo, en su origen, se realizó en un cierto período en explanadas vacías cerca de una población, trasladándose de un lugar a otro, de manera similar a los circos occidentales. Los artistas y el personal se desplazan con sus propiedades, tales como vestuario, decorados, sillas, sistema de sonido, generadores eléctricos diésel, todo ello contenido en un edificio portátil llamado tobong. Durante su viaje, los miembros del grupo también viven en esta tobong. Ketoprak troupes might own or rent a performance building, such as Ketoprak Srimulat that used to be performed in a theatre both in Jakarta and Surabaya back in the 1980s, or troupes might travel through villages. The travelling ketoprak troupe is called Kethoprak Tobong, also known as Ketoprak Tonil. It might be considered as common people theatrical tradition in Java. The show were performed in certain period in an empty plain near a village and moved from one place to another, in fashion similar to western travelling circus. In this traveling troupe, the performers and staffs also brought show properties; such as costumes, stage decorations, chairs, gamelan, sound system, diesel electric generator, all were contained in a portable building that also used as set or stage called "tobong". During their journey, the troupe members also living in this tobong. Recently ketoprak has been adopted into television show, the "Ketoprak Humor" show was aired in Indonesian national television. It is a comedy and action performance, often took place in modern settings or in historical ancient Javanese kingdoms. The ketoprak that took the story of ancient Java is quite similar with Wayang wong performance, however ketoprak performance is more free for improvisations, jokes and adoption of popular languages, while Wayang wong are traditionally highly stylized with precise and structurized dance drama discipline. Dalam perkembangannya, Ketoprak kemudian menggunakan iringan gamelan jawa, dan penggarapan cerita maupun iringan yang lebih rumit. Tema cerita dalam sebuah pertunjukan ketoprak bermacam-macam.
