Gatti comenzó como operador de cámara a principios de los 40 y debutó como cinematógrafo en 1953. En 1943, fue sentenciado a cinco años de prisión y posteriormente se fuer al exilio, por haber desfigurado un retrato de Benito Mussolini colgado en las paredes de Cinecittà. Es conocido principalmente por su colaboración con el director Gillo Pontecorvo, especialmente en la experimental La batalla de Argel, en la que se basa la teoría de la cinéma vérité. Ganó cinco Nastro d'Argento a la mejor fotografía. También trabajó cono otros directores como Roman Polanski, Nanni Loy, Damiano Damiani, Eriprando Visconti, Luigi Zampa, George P. Cosmatos y Sergio Corbucci. Gatti fue durante mucho tiempo presidente de la Asociación Italiano de cinematógrafos (Aic). (es)

He is probably best known for his collaboration with director Gillo Pontecorvo, especially for the experimental cinematography of The Battle of Algiers, that was inspired by the cinéma vérité theory. He won five Silver Ribbon for Best Cinematography. He also worked, among others, with Roman Polanski, Nanni Loy, Damiano Damiani, Eriprando Visconti, Luigi Zampa, George P. Cosmatos and Sergio Corbucci. Gatti has long been the president of the Italian Association of cinematographers (Aic). (en)
