Nude psychotherapy is the use of non-sexual social nudity as an intentional means to improve the participant's psychological health. The field began in the 1930s with psychological studies of the effects of social nudity on the lives of naturists. It developed in the 1960s along with the encounter group movement as a way to challenge preconceptions and promote intimacy and trust, but suffered a decline in the 1980s. It is still used by some organizations that offer participatory workshops on intimacy, sex and love.

Det förekommer dels att antingen terapeuten (terapeuterna) eller den person eller grupp som behandlas är nakna, dels att samtliga är nakna. Nakenhet var vanligt vid botande i äldre tid och uppmärksammades i början på 1900-talet, då dels solbelyst hud förknippades med hälsa, dels dåtidens kläder på goda grunder ansågs ohygieniska – naket stärkande friluftsliv förespråkades men kom även att användas i psykoterapi från 1960-talet. Sedan 2010 driver en kvinna en onlinetjänst, "The Naked Therapist" Sarah White. Via webbkamera samtalar hon med män runt om i världen om deras problem. Det som skiljer sig från andra terapeuter är att hon efter hand tar av sig kläderna och även låter klienterna göra det. Hennes verksamhet har fått mycket uppmärksamhet i massmedia, och även från terapibranschen, men utan att mötas av egentlig kritik. Nakenterapi har blivit vanligare efter Sarah Whites framgångar. Numera finns även Naked Yoga Therapy. En terapeut i Australien, Tamra Mercieca, driver sedan 2018 ”naked therapy”, där nakenheten är mer bildlig. (sv)
