Hier wurden Flugzeuge früher mit einem vertikalen Abstand von 2.000 Fuß zueinander gestaffelt. Mit RVSM wurde dies auf 1.000 Fuß (ca. 300 m) herabgesetzt. Im Luftraum unterhalb von 29.000 Fuß wurde schon immer mit 1.000 Fuß Staffelung geflogen. Über 41.000 Fuß werden weiterhin 2.000 Fuß als vertikaler Abstand genutzt. Während des Fluges in RVSM-Luftraum ist die Benutzung des Autopiloten zwingend erforderlich. Zum Flug im RVSM ist eine bestimmte Ausrüstung erforderlich, die eine genügend genaue Anzeige und ein ausreichend genaues Einhalten der Flughöhe durch den Autopiloten erlauben. Die Erfordernisse zum Einfliegen in RVSM-Lufträume sind:
* zwei voneinander unabhängige Höhenmesser,
* eine Vorrichtung, die beim Verlassen der vorgegebenen Höhe einen Alarm auslöst,
* ein Autopilot, der die Höhe auf 65 Fuß genau halten kann
* ein Transponder mit Höhenübertragung und Verbindung zum Höhenmessgerät (Transponder Mode C/S) (de)

Précédemment, deux aéronefs situés au-dessus du même point géographique devaient être espacés verticalement d'au moins 1 000 pieds s'ils étaient en dessous du niveau de vol 290, et 2 000 pieds au-dessus de ce niveau. Ces valeurs avaient été choisies en tenant compte de la précision des altimètres, qui se dégrade quand l'altitude croît. Cette précision s'étant améliorée au fil du temps, l'OACI a décidé de réduire la norme à 1 000 pieds afin de multiplier les niveaux de vols utilisables dans les centres de contrôle régional et donc de fluidifier le trafic aérien. Con tale procedura, aumentando la capacità di traffico che lo spazio aereo può disporre, si riducono i ritardi alla partenza e in rotta, che valgono tempo e denaro per le compagnie aeree. È infatti noto che un motore a turbina con l'aumentare dell'altitudine, diminuendo la densità dell'aria, consuma meno per nodo percorso. Tale procedura aumenta il numero di velivoli che possono volare in sicurezza in un determinato spazio aereo. La norma per la separazione verticale era di 1000 piedi dalla superficie terrestre a FL290, 2000 piedi da FL290 a FL410 e 4000 piedi al di sopra di FL410. Questo perché l'accuratezza dell'altimetro barometrico (lo strumento utilizzato per determinare l'altitudine in base alla pressione atmosferica) diminuisce con l'altezza. Nel corso del tempo, l'uso degli air data computer (ADC, componenti avionici in grado di correggere i dati forniti dai sensori a bordo degli aeromobili) ha reso possibile una misura dell'altitudine più precisa ed un mantenimento del livello di volo più agevole. Per molti aerei moderni, quindi, la separazione di 2000 piedi divenne troppo restrittiva. Pertanto è stato proposto dall'ICAO che questa separazione fosse ridotta a 1000 piedi. (it)
