Chr. bis zum Ende ihrer Herrschaft, im Jahre 410, von den Römern besetzt. Seine Bedeutung erlangte es als Marinestützpunkt und Basislager für die Eroberung der Insel mit der Invasion Britanniens durch Kaiser Claudius im Jahre 43 n. Chr. Während der römischen Besatzungszeit entwickelte sich neben dem Kastell auch eine Zivilsiedlung bzw. ein wichtiger Handels- und Transithafen. Es war eines der beiden Haupttore zum römischen Britannien und somit eine der meistfrequentierten Anlaufstellen für den Schiffsverkehr, der die Insel mit Portus Itius/Gesoriacum (heute Boulogne-sur-Mer) an der gallischen Küste verband. Die römische Flotte kontrollier (de) Rutupiae o Portus Ritupis fue una antigua ciudad romana, cerca de Sandwich (Kent, Inglaterra), que se desarrolló alrededor de un fuerte (conocido actualmente como fuerte de Richborough) y el puerto asociado, junto a la costa sajona. Restos sustanciales de los enormes muros del fuerte aún se mantienen en pie con una altura de varios metros. (es) Rutupiæ est le nom d'un important port et camp romain en Bretagne, situé à Richborough, près de Sandwich, dans le Kent. Il a été fondé en 43, sur le site supposé du débarquement des troupes romaines de l'empereur Claude. Port important, avec Douvres, Rutupiæ est l'un des points de départ de la voie romaine de Watling Street, qui mène à Canterbury, Londres, St Albans (Verulamium) et Wroxester (Viroconium). D'importants vestiges du site sont toujours visibles, connues sous le nom de Richborough Fort. Les premières levées de terre ont été effectuées au milieu du Ier siècle, probablement pour protéger la tête de pont et les entrepôts de l'armée romaine.
