Parodie burlesque des romans courtois anglais de l'époque, Sire Topaze accumule tant de maladresses et de clichés que l'Aubergiste, autre pèlerin, ne peut s'empêcher de l'interrompre pour demander à Chaucer de raconter autre chose. Cependant, les critiques modernes y voient un véritable tour de force stylistique et une preuve du talent de poète de Chaucer : au XVIIIe siècle, Richard Hurd le décrit comme « un Don Quichotte miniature ».
