He was the son of Eccet Salach, a smith, and grew to the age of fourteen without speaking or washing himself. One day Athirne, the Ulaid's chief poet, sent his servant to Eccet to order an axe. The servant was shocked when Amergin uttered a precocious, cryptic poem, and ran home to tell his master what he had heard. (en)
- Amergin mac Eccit è un personaggio che compare nel ciclo dell'Ulster della mitologia irlandese. Era un poeta e guerriero alla corte di re Conchobar mac Nessa. Figlio del fabbro , dall'età di quattordici anni aveva smesso di parlare e di lavarsi. Un giorno Athirne, poeta-capo dell'Ulster, mandò un suo servo ad ordinare a la costruzione di un'ascia. Il servo rimase però sbalordito quando udì il figlio Amergin recitare un ottimo seppur criptico poema, e corse dal suo padrone per riferirgli l'accaduto. Athirne risolse di dover uccidere il ragazzo, per evitare di perdere la sua posizione, e fece affidamento proprio sulla nuova ascia che gli aveva forgiato. in realtà il fabbro gli sostituì l'arma con una perfetta copia fatta di argilla. - 아메르긴 막 에키트(아일랜드어: Amergin mac Eccit)는 아일랜드 신화의 얼스터 대계의 등장인물이다. 울라의 왕 콘코바르 막 네사의 궁정시인이자 전사였으며, 대장장이 에케트 살라크(Eccet Salach)의 아들로 태어났다. 아메르긴은 열네 살이 될 때까지 말을 깨우치지 못하고 스스로 씻지도 못했는데, 어느날 울라의 대시인 가 에케트에게 하인을 보내 도끼를 주문했다. 거기서 하인은 아메르긴이 난해한 시를 읊는 것을 보고 놀랐고, 주인에게 달려가서 자기가 본 것을 말했다. 아히르네는 아이가 커서 자기 자리를 빼앗을까봐 아이를 죽이려고 했다. 그러나 에케트가 점토로 만든 가짜와 아들을 바꿔치기해 놓았다. 주문한 도끼를 받으러 온 아히르네는 도끼를 들어 점토로 만든 가짜의 머리를 내려치고 도망쳤다. 울라인들은 아히르네의 집으로 몰려가서 에케트에게 보상하라고 강요했고, 아히르네는 아메르긴을 양아들로 받아들이고 그에게 시어법을 가르쳤다. 과연 아메르긴이 장성하자 아히르네의 대시인 자리를 빼앗게 되었다. - Amergin mac Eccit is a poet and warrior in the court of Conchobar mac Nessa in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. He was the son of Eccet Salach, a smith, and grew to the age of fourteen without speaking or washing himself. One day Athirne, the Ulaid's chief poet, sent his servant to Eccet to order an axe. The servant was shocked when Amergin uttered a precocious, cryptic poem, and ran home to tell his master what he had heard. Athirne resolved to kill the boy, for fear that he might take his job, but Eccet had replaced him with a lifelike clay replica. Athirne showed up to take delivery of his new axe, brought it down on the replica's head, and fled, thinking he had killed Amergin. The Ulaid besieged Athirne in his house and forced him to pay compensation to Eccet. He took Amergin as his foster-son and taught him his poetic skills, and in time Amergin did indeed take over from Athirne as chief poet of Ulster. Amergin married Findchoem, sister of Conchobar mac Nessa, king of the Ulaid. Their son was Conall Cernach, and their foster-son was Cú Chulainn. He had two other sons, Condra and Amergin. He killed the Ellén Trechend, the three-headed monster that made raids on Ireland from the cave of Cruachan. During the Táin Bó Cúailnge ("cattle raid of Cooley"), Amergin held up the advance of the Connachta army by pelting them with enormous stones for three days and nights. The Munster hero Cú Roí, who was with the army, threw stones back at him, and the stones smashed together in mid-air, showering the area with bits of stone, until Medb begged them both to stop. They came to an agreement that both would stop, and Cú Roí would return to Munster, but once he had gone, Amergin resumed throwing stones, arguing his agreement was only with Cú Roí. Eventually he agreed to withdraw until the final battle (a variant version of this episode appears in the first recension of Táin Bó Cúailnge, where the combatants are Cú Roí and ). (en)
