Er wurde aus Gebieten des damaligen Vorderösterreich gebildet und bestand aus den heutigen aargauischen Bezirken Rheinfelden und Laufenburg (ohne dem Gebiet der ehemaligen Gemeinde Hottwil, welche bis zu ihrer Fusion Teil des Bezirks Brugg war). Der Kanton bestand von 1802 bis 1803. Trotz intensiver diplomatischer Bemühungen der Fricktaler hörte der Kanton am 19. Februar 1803 auf zu existieren. Napoleon Bonaparte verfügte am 19. März in der Mediationsakte die Verschmelzung mit den Kantonen Aargau und Baden. (de) Kanton Fricktal was een kanton ten tijde van de Helvetische Republiek. Het bestond uit Oostenrijkse gebieden en de tegenwoordige Aargause gebieden Rheinfelden en Laufenburg. Het kanton bestond van 1802 tot 1803. Aan het einde van de 18e eeuw was het zuidelijke deel van Baden-Württemberg nog een Habsburgse provincie onder de naam Voor-Oostenrijk. Ook het ten zuiden van de Rijn gelegen behoorde daartoe. Laufenburg was hoofdstad tussen februari en september 1802. Wegens slecht bestuur door de stadhouder werd na acht maanden Rheinfelden de hoofdstad. (nl)
