A car crusher is an industrial device used to reduce the dimensions of derelict (depreciated) cars prior to transport for recycling. Car crushers are compactors and can be of several types: one is a "pancake", where a scrap automobile is flattened by a huge descending hydraulically powered plate, or a baling press type, with which the automobile is compressed from several directions until it resembles a large cube. A third type is a mobile crusher. It is small enough that it can be moved from location to location with a semi truck. This machine utilizes a much smaller plate that crushes the vehicle in sections, as it is slowly fed through the machine.

Neben losem Metallschrott werden vor allem ausgediente (bereits von allen Kunststoffen usw. befreite) PKW mittels einer Presse unter hoher Kraft von bis zu 20 MN verdichtet. Kompakte Schrottquader aus unsortiertem Mischschrott sind in der Weiterverarbeitung jedoch oft problematisch, da im Zweifel Nichteisenmetalle (z. B. Kupfer) schwer vom Eisenschrott zu trennen sind. Dieses kann zu erheblichen Qualitätseinbußen des Stahls beim erneuten Einschmelzen führen. Daher werden Schrottfahrzeuge heute bevorzugt lediglich horizontal verdichtet. Die vorbehandelten Fahrzeugwracks werden schließlich mittels einer Schredderanlage fraktioniert, um eine sortenreine Aufbereitung der Fraktionen zu ermöglichen. Die weltweit größte Schrottpresse steht in Eltersdorf, Erlangen, wo täglich bis zu 1000 Tonnen Metallschrott zu kompakteren Quadern gepresst werden. Die ganze Anlage ist sonn- und feiertags zur Besichtigung freigegeben. (de)
