| - Die VC1540 ist ein 5,25-Zoll-Diskettenlaufwerk für den Heimcomputer VC20 von Commodore. Zusammen mit diesem bildete sie das erste Computersystem mit Floppy für weniger als 1000 US-Dollar. Die Floppy wurde November 1980 erstmals ausgeliefert. Der damalige deutsche Einführungspreis lag bei DM 1898,00 (ca. EUR 970,00). Der VC 1540 ist die deutsche Version der amerikanischen VIC 1540. Die 1540 besitzt nur einen Schreib-Lese-Kopf und kann daher Disketten lediglich einseitig beschreiben. Die Kapazität beträgt 166 KB. Disketten, die als einseitig beschreibbar verkauft wurden, waren auch auf der Rückseite mit einer magnetisierbaren Fläche beschichtet. Man konnte solche Disketten daher falsch herum in das Laufwerk legen und weitere 166 KB beschreiben. Dazu war es allerdings nötig, eine kleine Kerbe in die Diskette zu schneiden, um den Schreibschutz zu deaktivieren. Der Handel verkaufte dafür passende Stanzgeräte, so genannte Diskettenlocher. Wie die meisten Floppy-Laufwerke von Commodore ist die 1540 ein eigenständiger Computer mit integriertem Commodore DOS. Die 1540 war der Vorgänger der für den C64 gedachten VC1541. Tatsächlich waren die ersten 1541 (mit der sogenannten „langen Platine“) nichts weiter als 1540 mit geringfügig modifiziertem DOS. Die 1541 war in der Datenübertragung sogar etwas langsamer als die 1540, weil der C64, aufgrund des direkten Zugriffs seines Grafikchips auf den Hauptspeicher, die Datenrate der für den VC20 gedachten 1540 nicht einhalten konnte. Umgekehrt lief die VC1541 problemlos am VC20. Die Firmware des VC1540-Laufwerkes war fehlerhaft und die Signalübertragung zu schnell für den C64, so dass man nur mit einigen Tricks Daten von diesem Laufwerk auf den C64 bekam. Als ab 1982 die Nachfrage nach dem C64 explodierte, gab es Lieferengpässe bei der zugehörigen VC1541. Weil noch viele 1540er auf Lager waren, wurden etliche durch EPROM-Wechsel auf den Stand des 1541er-Laufwerks umgebaut. Sie tragen auf dem Gehäuse die Bezeichnung „1540“, sind aber vollwertige 1541er. (de)
- The Commodore 1540 (also known as the VIC-1540) introduced in 1982 is the companion floppy disk drive for the VIC-20 home computer. It uses single-sided 5¼" floppy disks, on which it stores roughly 170 kB of data utilizing Commodore's GCR data encoding scheme. Because of the low price of both the VIC-20 and the 1540, this combination was the first computer with a disk drive to be offered on the US market for less than $1000 USD, although the combination of the Commodore 64 and 1541 would prove more enduring. The 1540 is an "intelligent peripheral" in that it has its own MOS Technology 6502 CPU (just like its VIC-20 host) and the resident Commodore DOS on board in ROM – contrary to almost all other home computer systems of the time, where the DOS was loaded from a boot floppy and was executed on the computer's CPU. Due to a timing conflict with the C64's video chip, the C64 doesn't work properly with the 1540. The better-known 1541 is mechanically and nearly electronically identical to the 1540 but has a revised ROM that permits it to work with the C64 by slowing the drive down slightly. However, it is possible to revert the 1541 into 1540 mode with a Commodore BASIC software command (OPEN 15,8,15, "UI-" : CLOSE 15) to permit better speed when used with a VIC-20. The 1540 is relatively rare. While cheaper than most other drives of the day, it was more expensive than the VIC-20 computer itself, and the disk media was also still relatively pricey. Also, the relatively small memory of the VIC meant that the faster program loading times of the drive did not gain more than a few seconds compared to tape media. Thirdly, almost all commercial software for the VIC-20 was sold on cartridge or cassette tape media, giving low incentive to buy a floppy drive. The C64 followed close on the heels of the VIC-20, quickly discontinuing the 1540. Most 1540s still in existence were modified with a 1541 ROM so it would work with a C64.
