The Democratic Party (Spanish: Partido Democrático, PD), renamed in 1893 as the Liberal Party (Spanish: Partido Liberal, PL), was a Nicaraguan political party in the 19th century. The power base of the liberal Democratic Party was in the city of León; while their conservative counterparts were centered in Granada. The Democrats were opposed to the Legitimists who expelled the Democrats from the constitutional assembly in 1853, driving them underground or into exile, and promulgated a constitution of 1854. The liberal parties in Nicaragua have their roots in the historical Democratic Party.

Nov. 2011 (CET) Die Partido Democrático war die liberale Partei in Nicaragua zwischen 1821 und 1893. Die offizielle Gründung erfolgte mit der Unabhängigkeit des Capitanats Guatemala von Spanien in der liberalen Hochburg León (Nicaragua). In der Partei organisierten sich Kaufleute, um Handelsfreiheit durchzusetzen und gegen die Privilegien der ehemaligen Beamten von Krone und Klerus vorzugehen, die Mitglieder der konservativen Partei waren. Prominente Mitglieder der Partido Democrático aus den Anfängen der Unabhängigkeit Nicaraguas waren Bernabé Somoza und José María Vallé, alias El Chelón. Patricio Rivas wurde 1840 zum Supremo Director (Staatschef von Nicaragua) gewählt. Francisco Castellón Sanabria leitete im Mai 1854 zusammen mit General Máximo Jerez Tellería den Aufstand der Partido Democrático, der sich gegen die Verlegung des Regierungssitzes von León (Nicaragua) nach Granada (Nicaragua) durch Fruto Chamorro Pérez richtete. Am 16. Juni 1854 veröffentliche Tellería ein Dekret, das die Unterstützung der Regierung von Chamorro mit Sitz in Granada verbot. Im Oktober 1854 schloss Francisco Castellón Sanabria einen Contract mit dem US-Militärdienstleister Byron Cole, der die Auslieferung von 200 Männern festlegte, die im Juni 1855 von William Walker angeführt worden waren.
