Esclataren a conseqüència de la reforma protestant de Martí Luter. Tot i no tenir sempre una relació aparent entre elles, totes van estar relacionades les unes amb les altres. (ca)

Fought after the Protestant Reformation began in 1517, the wars disrupted the religious and political order in the Catholic countries of Europe, or Christendom. Religie was echter niet de enige oorzaak van de oorlogen, waarin ook opstanden, territoriale ambities en strijd tussen grootmachten plaatsvonden. Zo was bijvoorbeeld tegen het einde van de Dertigjarige Oorlog (1618–1648) het katholieke Frankrijk bondgenoot van de protestantse strijdkrachten tegen de katholieke Habsburgse monarchie.
