L’organisation est créée aux États-Unis en 1984 par Bill Kauth, Ron Hering et Rich Tosi, en s’inspirant du mouvement mythopoétique et des travaux de Robert Bly. Pour en faire partie, les participants doivent effectuer un weekend de formation initiatique, le « New Warrior Training Aventures » (en français « Aventure initiatique du nouveau guerrier »). En 2020, elle revendique 70 000 participants. (fr)
