En un principio se plantearon estas Cumbres para tratar la implementación del Área de Libre Comercio de las Américas (ALCA), que debió haber entrado en vigor en el mes de enero de 2005, pero no consiguió el consenso necesario. - 米州首脳会議（べいしゅうしゅのうかいぎ、英語：Summits of the Americas、略称：SOA、スペイン語：Cumbre de las Américas）は、アメリカ州（米州、北アメリカとラテンアメリカ）諸国の政府首脳が参加する国際会議である。 キューバは「民主主義国でない」として初開催から排除され続けてきたが、2015年にようやく招請された。2022年6月のロサンゼルスでの首脳会議でホストとなったアメリカ合衆国はキューバのほかベネズエラ、ニカラグアの反米左派独裁国家を招かないことを表明し、他の35参加国のうちこれに反発したメキシコなど6カ国と、米国から制裁を受けているエルサルバドルとグアテマラの首脳が参加を取りやめ、ベリーズとアルゼンチンが米国に苦言を呈した。 (ja)
- De Summits of the Americas (SOA) zijn een serie internationale topontmoetingen die de leiders van landen in Noord-Amerika, Centraal-Amerika, Zuid-Amerika en de Caraïben samenbrengt. De ontmoetingen bieden de mogelijkheid voor discussies over een breed scala aan onderwerpen. De summits zijn georganiseerd door een variëteit aan multilaterale organisaties geleid door de Organisatie van Amerikaanse Staten. - The Summit of the Americas (SOA) is an international summit meeting that brings together the leaders of countries in the Organization of American States (OAS). Cuba was expelled from the OAS under pressure from the United States after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Cuba participated in the 2015 summit in Panama, and sent its foreign minister to the subsequent 2018 summit in Peru. In the early 1990s, the formerly ad hoc summits were institutionalized into a regular "Summit of the Americas" based on the principles of democracy and free trade. The meetings, organized by a number of multilateral bodies led by the OAS, provide an opportunity for discussions about a variety of issues and topics. (en)
