Es wird im Süden Polens gesprochen, als Zentrum gilt Krakau. Auf einem kleinpolnischen Substrat basierte auch der Lemberger Dialekt der ehemals polnischen Stadt Lemberg (polnisch Lwów) in der Ukraine. Gemeinsame Merkmale aller kleinpolnischen Dialekte sind die folgenden:
* Das so genannte „Masurieren“, d. h. die Aussprache von sz als s, von ż als z, von cz als c und von dż als dz (also z. B. sary grau, zona Ehefrau usw.);
* Assimilation von stimmlosen Konsonanten an folgende Sonanten, auch über die Wortgrenze hinweg (daher stammt die charakteristische Aussprache der Endung -śmy als -źmy);
* Veränderung von -ch am Wortende zu -k (na nogak auf den Beinen, Krzan der Meerrettich). Für einzelne kleinpolnische Dialekte sind u. a. typisch die gute Bewahrung der ursprünglichen Nasale ą und ę in der Gegend um Krakau und die Erstsilbenbetonung in der Region Podhale.

Commonly recognized subdialects of the Lesser Polish dialect include Podhale, , Lwów, , , and some others. The southernmost Lesser Polish dialects spoken by the Gorals (Podhale, Żywiec, Orava, Spiš and many others) are collectively called the (Polish: gwara góralska) despite being a collection of many similar subdialects. Lesser Polish has the richest literature out of all Polish dialects. There are many books and poems written in the Kraków and Podhale dialects. The common traits of the Lesser Polish dialect include:
* mazurzenie
* regressive voicing of obstruents, including across word boundaries; e.g.: kot leci [kɔd ˈlɛt͡ɕi] (standard Polish: [kɔt ˈlɛt͡ɕi])
* differentiated nasalisation (or lack thereof) of /ɔ̃/ and /ɛ̃/ in different parts of the area
* merger of stop+fricative consonant clusters into affricates; e.g.: trzysta [ˈt͡ʂɨsta] (standard Polish: [ˈtʂɨsta] or [ˈt͡ʂʂɨsta])
* frequent usage of initial syllable stress, also oxytonic stress in vocative case (as opposed to paroxytonic stress common in other varieties of Polish)
* frequent usage of grammatical particle "że" in imperative mood ("weźże" vs. "weź" – take) (en)
- Dialekt małopolski – dialekt języka polskiego, którym posługują się mieszkańcy Małopolski. Nie jest on jednakowy w całym regionie. W dialekcie małopolskim występowały według Wincentego Pola – trzy „odcienie”: sandomierski, lubelski, i czerwono-ruski (sanocki). Dialekt ten autor uważa za najbardziej urozmaicony. Najbardziej wysunięte na południe gwary małopolskie, którymi posługują się górale (podhalańska, żywiecka, orawska, spiska, zagórzańska, górolsko godka itd.), są razem nazywane gwarą góralską, mimo że, nie są jednakową gwarą. Większość literatury małopolskiej pisana jest w gwarze góralskiej (głównie podhalańskiej). (pl)

Малопольский диалект сформировался на основе племенного диалекта вислян на территории Малой Польши (Малопольши) в верхнем течении реки Вислы с центром в Кракове, распространившись позднее на территорию, включающую районы Лодзи, Люблина, Радома на севере, выходя за границы Словакии в районе Оравы, на юге.
