The phonetic change "f → h" is one of the most distinctive features of Spanish language among the Romance languages, although it also occurs in Gascon, Aromanian language, Romanian language of Moldavia and Transylvanian and, sporadically, other Romance languages. The phenomenon consists in that, under certain phonological conditions, the initial Latin f- became an aspirated h- which then disappeared in the standard varieties of Spanish, although its pronunciation is preserved for some words in several dialects, especially in a large part of Andalusia, Extremadura and Spanish America (it is also maintained in dialects of transition with the Spanish language such as Cantabro and Extremaduran).
