- The Brut or Roman de Brut (completed 1155) by the poet Wace is a loose and expanded translation in almost 15,000 lines of Norman-French verse of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Latin History of the Kings of Britain. It was formerly known as the Brut d'Engleterre or Roman des Rois d'Angleterre, though Wace's own name for it was the Geste des Bretons, or Deeds of the Britons. Its genre is equivocal, being more than a chronicle but not quite a fully-fledged romance. - Il Roman de Brut (1155) è un'opera di Robert Wace, chierico normanno legato alla corte di Eleonora d'Aquitania ed Enrico II d'Inghilterra, e si presenta come una traduzione ampliata dell'Historia Regum Britanniae di Goffredo di Monmouth (1135 ca.). Il romanzo fu presentato nel 1155 con dedica ad Eleonora, e con intento encomiastico connette le radici dei monarchi bretoni addirittura alla progenie di Enea (il protagonista, Brut, altri non sarebbe se non un nipote di Enea). I materiali usati sono però indipendenti dalla tradizione classica e si rifanno piuttosto alle leggende locali, come per esempio quella di re Artù. Ciò che però, a partire dal Brut, avrà grande fortuna nella narrativa romanzesca medievale non sono le storie dei re bretoni, ma gli episodi che presentano sviluppi psicologic (it)

É baseado no livro de Godofredo de Monmouth, Historia Regum Britanniae, e provavelmente começou a ser escrito em 1150 e finalizado em 1155. O objetivo desse trabalho era difundir o interesse das lendas e histórias dos novos territórios anglo-normandos para os leitores normandos, retratando a história do Rei Artur, regredindo no tempo até o mítico Bruto de Troia.
