William Nelson Edward Hall VC (28 April 1827 – 27 August 1904) was the first Black person, first Nova Scotian, and third Canadian to receive the Victoria Cross. He received the medal for his actions in the 1857 Siege of Lucknow during the Indian Rebellion. Hall and an officer from his ship continued to load and fire a 24-pounder gun at the walls after the rest of the party had been killed or injured by the defenders.

  • William Hall (28 avril 1829 – † 25 août 1904) fut le premier noir, le premier Néo-Écossais et le troisième Canadien à recevoir la croix de Victoria. Au siège de Lucknow (Inde), il a courageusement poursuivi le combat alors que ses compagnons tombaient autour de lui. Né à en Nouvelle-Écosse, il était le fils d'un ancien esclave. À l'âge de 17 ans, il rejoint la marine marchande en tant que marin. Il rejoint ensuite la Royal Navy à Liverpool, Royaume-Uni, en février 1852. Hall resta dans la Navy et fut promu sur le avant de se retirer du service en 1876. (fr)
